When I first started CITNB I worked at a fairly conservative finance firm. I had only been out of college a couple of years and so my professional wardrobe wasn’t nearly as extensive as it is today. I despise most slacks as they’re just not for me so I would rotate my favorite wide-leg black pants, attempting to style them in as many ways as possible in hopes that my coworkers wouldn’t notice that in actuality I was wearing them 3 to 4 days out of the work week.
Moving from the west coast and a business professional dress code, to the east coast and working in a fashion office for the first time, I’d have to say one of the biggest highlights for me was ditching the conservative wear. I quickly realized that an office where a leather jacket, camo harem pants and sneakers was completely acceptable was just the place for me.
I remember being so nervous for my final interview with Robbie Myers (editor-in-chief at ELLE)… mainly just over what to wear. I did some major pinterest-ing, and googling for professional yet fashionable interview inspiration. I ended up wearing a dress and pumps however I wish I had owned this blazer at the time as it instantly gives me that extra dose of confidence whenever I slip it on. The sleek shape adds a touch of unexpected personality, and it makes any outfit look polished and let’s be honest, infinitely cooler. I have been pairing it with more casual separates recently to offset the business-y feel (party on the bottom!).
Even though I’m happy (and thankful) to now be completely freelance and currently working for myself, I really miss seeing what everyone wore in the Hearst building. Talk about style inspiration!
