I keep having this conversation with girlfriends and had it again this past week while in New York… this feeling of coming out of those early years of motherhood spent in nursing tops and what I call “on the floor clothes” and not exactly sure how to freshen your wardrobe for the new season. Or not even the new season… for yourself! To feel good!!
I personally also felt this urge over the past couple years to elevate my early 30’s (post having babies) wardrobe into my now later-30’s wardrobe. I also live in a more casual city now and work from home… but my mood is still dressing for life in other cities like New York (so there’s that that I’m still adjusting too).
If you’re feeling in a bit of a style slump as well, I know I say this a lot but it really takes going through your entire closet and editing. Try everything on and get a feel for where you’re at / what vibe are you going for now? Because we evolve and personal style changes! What do you feel good in? Trying everything on will help you get a better sense of what might be missing from your wardrobe… but also help you get re-excited about the pieces in your closet and new ways to restyle them. Put together a personal style mood board for yourself! I know this always helps me.
Where I’m at with my own personal style |
I truly live in a capsule wardrobe most days out of the week. I love a good basic and a neutral palette. Pieces that all work and can be easily remixed and restyled. Easy separates to grab for on those rushed mornings. But after editing and getting my closet to a good place of foundational basics (hiii Toteme) over the past year or two I’m now craving more of those one-off statement pieces and moments of color this season that give outfits personality. I love vintage shopping for those unique finds. And I’m just having more fun in general getting dressed again these days than I have in the past few years. It also might be this season because I’m such a fall / winter dressing person and love a great boot, fun heel and statement coats which always make the look.
I’ve always been drawn to the Olsen’s style (also because they’re my size) along with Sienna Miller… and have found myself finding so much inspiration pulling up older pics of them again lately. I love how they mix vintage with classic pieces and always look sophisticated / chic / timeless but also with that touch of personality / something interesting… which I’ve realized is how I aspire to dress.
Dress for yourself |
Coming back around to some thoughts on living in a more casual city… or feeling like you don’t have an occasion to wear your favorite pieces. (This is a big part of personal style for me and over the past couple of years of not having those occasions to dress up for.) I realized I was complaining to my husband or friends about “but where would I actually wear that?” and lately I’ve been just dressing for myself again. Or creating mini dates and places to go again to dress-up and it’s helped my mood so much. When I put on a playful jacket or leather jacket (more sizes here) I just feel very me. And even if I don’t have anywhere to be I’m just trying to dress for my mood again. Because honestly dressing for ourselves and personal style is all about how it makes you feel. We just want to feel confident, like ourselves, and good everyday!
New Season Trends |
If you’re stumped on the trends this season I wouldn’t worry too much about them. I think it’s more important to focus on what styles you feel good in. Trends as we all know come and go. I don’t like to invest too much into them but I do want to feel current. I’m always for investing in quality pieces over quantity (my days at Elle and as a buyer spoiled me with my preference to beautifully made pieces). That said, if you’re feeling a trendy moment I wouldn’t splurge on it, and I’d look to Zara, H&M which has a great trend edit, Mango or your favorite vintage shop etc.
