I’ve become quite the road warrior this year. Since I’m constantly in-between Chico (where Syllabus is located), Sacramento (homebase), and San Francisco, I now keep a separate beauty and toiletry bag ready to go which has saved me on multiple occasions and makes last minute packing a breeze.
Growing up I remember not understanding why my mom packed what seemed like her entire bathroom counter when we went on vacation but as I get older I’ve realized how key it is to have those favorite products with you when traveling. Indulging in your bedtime routine no matter what city or state you’re in, using your own shaving cream and razor (not a cheap hotel freebie), and washing your hair with your favorite shampoo makes all the difference when you’re not at home. And is especially key to feeling like the best version of yourself when you’re in a different time zone! Since my guy and I are taking off for Santa Fe, New Mexico mañana I thought I’d share what toiletries I’ll be bringing along.
The Face | When it comes to my daily skin care routine a lip balm and face lotion with spf is a must (no matter where I’m traveling or what I have planned that day I always have spf with me). I also swear by RODIN face oil which I put on morning and night, and have also recently been using SK-II’s “miracle water.” I apply either/or before my face lotion and these are key for keeping my skin hydrated. I love this step in my bedtime routine as they leave my skin feeling amazing!
I always bring along my own face wash and face lotion. My facialist (hii Gabby!–she’s the best–go see her at Mosaic Salon) turned me onto Dermaquest’s glycolic cleanser which acts as a daily exfoliant and I can definitely notice a difference (and usually breakout) if I go a few days without using. Also, my current favorite face lotion in constant rotation is: Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream. Try it, you will love. Smells amazing too.
The Body | Another tip I’ve learned over the years–your own razor and shaving cream is worth packing (especially during the warmer months or if I’m headed to a beach destination). I love this eos shaving cream as it’s super moisturizing and smells yummy, and the Gillette Venus razor refills are perfect for traveling. I just throw it away at the end of my trip.
The Hair | I always bring my own curling iron but save room in my suitcase and use the hotel’s (or my mom / sister / friend’s–depending on where I’m headed) blow dryer. I also bring along this finishing spray which gives my curls that perfect amount of texture and volume. I’ll often use this and maybe a little dry shampoo over hairspray. Another tip: check your hotel to see what kind of shampoo or conditioner they provide (might seem a little crazy but most websites will say and this could save you room in your bag!).
The Nails | If I’m really organized I’ll get a manicure before I leave. And if I’m even more organized I’ll bring a shade from home to the nail salon so I can bring that same shade along with me on my trip for touch ups. This only seldom happens but when it does I’m pretty proud of myself.
Now, what are your must haves when traveling? I would love to hear what you won’t leave home without!
