When I asked Jennine (Mrs. Peasy) what she loves most about hosting, I got a kick out of the fact that she said she usually hates going to parties. “Why? I’m socially inept, and a bit awkward. However, I do love hanging out with people. My thing is, when I host, I always have something to do, and it feels really good to give people a wonderful experience. It can be addictive!” — Jennine, Mrs. Peasy
This got me thinking–something has clicked with me this summer and I’ve become addicted to hosting and planning the next fête (as well). What I like the most about my new found hobby besides gathering my favorite people, is simply creating the mood. Setting the scene with decor, lighting and music really sets off the whole vibe of the party. I agree with Jennine that I like to keep busy as guests arrive which helps calm the nerves. I tend to keep preoccupied by pouring the adult beverages–also to ensure that the night is kicked off on the right note!
Jennine and I are sharing our top 6 hostess tips below to keep in mind when throwing your next party…
1. Give yourself enough time to get dressed / ready. I tend to get wrapped up in the prep and decor which means I end up rushing to throw myself together five minutes before the guests arrive. And be sure to pick out and try on your outfit a day or two before. You don’t want to be late to your own celebration because you can’t figure out what to wear! — Alicia
2. Eliminate any pre-party nerves by enjoying a few sips of wine while putting on your makeup (my secret!). –Alicia
3. If you’re not a big cook, look into subbing in a few dishes with catering. Whole Foods has some good menus, as does Bi-Rite in San Francisco. If you’re super last minute, try raiding the prepared food section of a nice market. It could be considered “cheating” but it will take a load off your plate and it might actually save you money. If you have a dish you’re a pro at, just make that one dish if you feel compelled to cook for people. — Jennine
4. Keep things as simple as possible. If you have a friend who can help you with the dish ware, flowers, dessert–take them up on it! (We did!) — Alicia
5. More Candles, you can never have too many… the perfect moody lighting. — Jennine
6. Don’t worry if people will have fun. Just get everyone talking by asking them to talk about themselves. Research table topics or plan a game–it’s always a nice way to get people out of their normal script of chatter. — Jennine
