I’ve never been good at keeping (my own) secrets so I’m way excited to finally share my bump news (due this November)! If you signed up for my updated newsletter then you found out Friday, and I know some of you had guessed it thanks to all of my flowy tops and dresses this summer (although honestly my style hasn’t changed one bit). I’m thrilled to share this new chapter with you and since finding out the gender (such a fun surprise that I’ll be sharing soon!) it’s felt all the more real. For those interested, a few facts about the past few months below…
First Trimester:
Nesting definitely started early. I first knew I was pregnant when I wanted to stay home and bake on a Saturday… which has never been the norm for me. I’ve never been this into cooking, and my guy has loved reaping the benefits. I’ve made 3 cakes since getting preggers which is 3 times more than I had ever made before.
Also, I started wondering what was up when literally everything made me cry. Movies, sentimental songs, commercials on the radio, just thinking of family members or the time my guy moved the patio furniture out for me to lounge later that day at 6am before leaving for work. As someone who’s not super hormonal this was tip off number two. (And lately–all of the Olympic wins, like cute little Simone getting the gold in gymnastics!).
Thankfully the nausea I did experience during my first trimester wasn’t anything to complain about and nothing a few crackers wouldn’t cure. What I did experience was beyond extreme exhaustion. I couldn’t believe the complete brain fog. The computer gave me a headache, hot showers made me queazy, and naps and carbs were my best friend. This really slowed me down.
Second Trimester:
Like clockwork on day 1 of my second trimester I woke up feeling 5,000 times better and full of energy again. I almost had forgotten what my normal felt like. Oh how productive those first few days out of the fog felt–I was super woman. And still feeling so great now.
Cravings: I wish I had something fun to report here as I keep getting this question but honestly nothing out of the norm. Besides a non-interest in meat / fish and surviving on a mainly carb based diet during my first trimester, the second trimester I’ve been back to my usual eating habits. Lots of fruits (thank you summer! cherries, peaches and mangos, I love you!). Thankfully I had a pretty healthy diet pre-pregnancy so I’m just trying to keep everything in moderation.
Vice: Caffeine. I cut out coffee during the first trimester mainly because it never sounded good. But since my second trimester I’ve allowed myself my morning coffee (although I can never usually drink that much) and an afternoon iced tea to get me through the day.
As a wine lover I thought this would be the most difficult thing to give up, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how easy it’s been.
Besides feeling those cute little kicks (constantly!)–hands down the best part about pregnancy?–I’m so in love with my guy. I don’t know if it’s the hormones but I’ve never felt as connected as we are now (even 12 years in). He’s been the sweetest to me–especially on those days that I’ve felt crummy and am complaining about my changing body.
Another plus!–I’m not really a hormonal kinda girl, thankfully, but we all get a little irritable about that time of the month right? One bonus that’s come with pregnancy is that I feel so much more balanced and chilled out. My husband keeps saying “I wish you were always pregnant” and I agree. This may be the happiest I’ve ever been. So much to look forward to!
On discovering the gender: I had an instinctive feeling all along (and would love to hear your guesses too!).
