I recently got schooled in layering (rugs!) by my girlfriend Caitlin and I thought her tips may come in handy the next time you find yourself rug shopping–or decide to switch around those you already own.
First things first, I lucked out with this super cool vintage rug courtesy of my Great Uncle (a freebie from my parentals). Secondly, you saw that I already tried layering it here with the Ikea rug we had in New York. Turns out I needed C’s help. She talked my guy and I into retiring our well loved darker cowhide to another spot in the apartment and into ordering this one from Lulu & Georgia. (We went with the lighter shade which is more of a contrast with the vintage rug and lightens up the room.)

“Choosing rugs for a client’s home can sometimes be the hardest part. It’s a bit overwhelming to find the right color, size, and type but with these 3 tips you’ll be golden the next time you go rug hunting!” – Caitlin Flemming
1. Measure your space (and sofa!) to make sure you buy the correct size rug. The biggest mistake I see people make is choosing a rug that is too small or too large for the space. My rule is that the rug should be at least a few inches larger than the sofa on either end. But, if you fall in love with one that is too small, don’t fret, you can always layer it like we did here.
(Optional: add a foam pad under the largest rug for comfort)
2. When layering rugs it’s important to have the bottom rug as large as the room can handle. Sisal, jute and seagrass rugs are less expensive options but if you have a vintage rug, like Alicia’s, it will add more depth to the layering effect. When thinking about a layering piece we wanted to pull out the lighter colors in the rug and went with this light haired cowhide.
3. Lastly, it’s important to be consistent: You either want all of your furniture on the rug or all of it off the rug. You can also do half on and half off. Whichever you choose, just pick one and stick with it!
