There’s something about quirky curiosity shops that always get me. I could easily spend hours perusing my favorite spots on a Sunday afternoon (my ideal post-brunch activity!). And while Sacramento isn’t necessarily known for shopping, one thing we do have is some pretty great vintage and antiquing. Besides our bi-weekly antique faire, one of my favorite local antique gems to pop into and check out what’s new is: The Ruralist*. The owner, Tom, buys only what he loves (the best part about buying and owning a store), and I love checking out his edit of everything from dough bowls and brass candle sticks, to textiles and an amazing assortment of vintage Christmas decor and ornaments around the holidays. On our most recent visit to The Ruralist my guy picked out the sweetest 1920’s vintage toy truck for baby boy. I thought it was especially cute that he spotted and wanted it!
I’ve always been passionate about shopping local as much as possible, but after my experience buying for and helping to open Syllabus I’ve truly understood the importance of supporting small businesses. It’s those gems that make your city unique which is why I’m proud to be working with American Express over these next few weeks to highlight more of my favorite small businesses throughout Sacramento and the Bay.
Besides The Ruralist, additional vintage / antique stores worth checking out here in Sacramento: Scout Living (for furniture–it’s where I bought these chairs that I’m often asked about), Fringe (which sadly just closed its shop but is still doing warehouse sales), the aforementioned Sacramento Antique Faire (every other Sunday), and Old Gold (where I snagged this rug for our entryway–oh and while you’re there pay a visit to this guy! who’s right next door)
Textile love!
As an American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card holder, shopping at small businesses not only means you’re supporting local, but you can also get more rewards when you do (win, win!). Amex is offering 2X rewards when you enroll an eligible Amex card and spend at qualifying small businesses through the end of the year. (A great time to support local during this holiday season). You can learn more about this rewards program here, and if you’re not sure which small shops are part of this program you can search qualifying small businesses on their map.
You know I love me some sage. Also makes for great gifts.
An assortment of cool wire baskets–great for unique storage options.
My every growing collection of brass candles is all thanks to The Ruralist.
Our sweet truck find. Now we just need to fill it with some blocks or toys.
* The Ruralist is located at 57th Street (in the Antique Mall)
Thank you to American Express for partnering with me on this shop small series! (More to come!)
