I’ve moved 10 times in the past 10 years which is pretty wild (although maybe normal for your late teens / twenties as I’m counting my move to college and all of the dorms / apartments I had during those years). That’s a lot of adjusting, and meeting new people, and finding new sushi spots, and cool coffee shops, and where to buy wine or take your drying cleaning–you know, the important stuff. I recently received an email from a reader who asked how I managed to gracefully adapt to each coast (west to east and now back east to west). Gracefully? Wow, that’s flattering. You mean puffy eyes for a week straight from random tear-filled break downs? Don’t let me fool you, adjusting to a new city is hard but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it has everything to do with your mindset. Once you get in a positive head space and find that comforting spot whether it’s a park to go running, a café with friendly baristas or a cool vintage store that instantly makes you feel at home–you’ll be set.
After a rough first week here in Sacramento, I spotted Fringe’s eclectic store windows. I was lost one night (thanks a lot Siri) when I stumbled upon it. And as silly as it may sound to some, I think Siri was supposed to lead me there because as soon as I stepped inside this vintage treasure trove I was instantly transported to Brooklyn or the Mission (in San Francisco), and knew I had found my place.
So if you like curiosity shops as much as I do and you find yourself in Sacramento a) let me know! and b) be sure to stop by Fringe.
